We here at Coiltron Inc. recognize the Reduction of Hazardous Substances
act passed in Europe and are currently working on a roadmap for compliance. We
are and have been RoHS compliant since July of 2005 one year earlier
than the July 1 2006 deadline. Here is what it entails:
RoHS directive: RoHS, or Reduction of Hazardous Substances
was passed due to the small amount of available land in Europe, and
the expensive methods of disposing of them through incineration. The
directive states that any electronic components produced after July
1, 2006 must contain less than 0.1% lead (Pb), less than 0.1% Mercury
(Hg), less than 0.1% Cadmium (Cd), less than 0.1% Hexavalent Chromium
Cr (VI), less than 0.1% Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and less than
0.1% Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) by weight. However, Military,Medical,
and Aerospace components are exempt from the directive. Also
high voltage ( 1000Vac, and 1500Vdc ) are exempt as well as components
made pre RoHS directive.
WEEE directive ( associated with RoHS ): The WEEE, or
Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment directive states that companies
need a “take back” program for discrepant components and
equipment. Companies need to salvage and recycle materials
to the best of their abilities. Coiltron is already implementing
these practices, recycling discrepant solder, as well as magnet wire,
and are constructing a roadmap for reducing waste even more.
